Activities Kids Love
Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo
The Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo is an attraction for all ages. The zoo is set into a lush forest that makes the walk from exhibit to exhibit natural and serene. When entering different areas like the Indonesian Rain Forest, you walk through steam filled forest both indoors and out to reach the exhibits. There are many places throughout the zoo where the animals are free to roam and the family is free to walk through the habitats right alongside them.
The main attractions at the zoo include the Indonesian Rain Forest, African Journey, Austrailian Adventure, and the Indiana Family Farm. The exhibits in each area follow a trail that is easy to walk and ensures you won’t miss anything. We decided to forgo the stroller for our visit and David (5) and William (2) had no problem walking the entire zoo.
Your kiddos won’t want to miss the rides at the zoo either. A log boat ride through the Australian Adventure to get an up-close look at black swans and kangaroos, a train ride through the Indiana Family Farm and around Shoaff Lake, or a classic carousel ride will surely be enjoyed by the family.
Restaurants and snack shacks are located throughout the zoo to help keep the kids fed and happy. We stopped for lunch at Ray’s Barefoot Grill near the sting ray tank and aquarium. Our burgers and chicken sandwiches were delicious.
Science Central is full of fun and interactive science investigations that will keep kids of all ages engaged. Try turning your arm power into electricity to run a radio or light up a light. Experiment with parachutes and drop them from 20 feet in the air. Take in a show at the Science On A Sphere to learn about our solar system. The family will be enthralled moving from exhibit to exhibit at their own pace.
Tin Caps Baseball
A family visit to Fort Wayne isn’t complete without catching a Tin Caps Baseball game. Their new stadium makes the perfect setting to watch the game. The concourse is easy to walk around and offers lots of tasty treats that the family will love. One of our favorites was warm apple crisp with vanilla ice cream.
Fort Wayne offers many outdoor adventures that the fam will love. Bring your bikes or rent some once you’re there because Fort Wayne boasts around 100 miles of bike trails. You can also paddle down one of their three rivers on kayaks, canoes, or standing paddle boards. With 86 parks (some of which feature splash pads), your kids will have many ways to exert their energy.
Fort Wayne has many festivals that are perfect for family fun. From Greekfest to Germanfest and BBQ Ribfest, your whole month of June is likely to be full of joy. June isn’t the only month to celebrate in Fort Wayne. Nearly every month has unique festivals and activities. The Three Rivers Festival is a fun summer fest and the Johnny Appleseed Festival in September honors one of Fort Wayne’s most famous residents.
While you’re downtown, make sure to stop by The Yummi Bunni for delicious ice cream treats. Notorious for their ice cream inside of glazed donuts, your family will go nuts for this dessert. David’s favorite creation had moose tracks ice cream nestled between two glazed donuts with teddy grahams on top. William went with a traditional waffle cone with scoops of cookie dough ice cream. Can’t decide what flavor combinations to choose? Try the “bun of the week” – a delicious combination created by the bunni artists themselves.
DeBrand Fine Chocolates
No visit to Fort Wayne is complete without a visit to DeBrand Fine Chocolates. Stop in for a tasting of their gourmet chocolates or visit the headquarters for a tour of the chocolate making process. DeBrand uses the highest quality ingredients and makes all of their delicious centers from scratch.
Staying in a central location while visiting Fort Wayne is essential and The Holiday Inn is a perfect location for families. Whether you’re heading to the zoo or taking in a concert at the Colosseum, The Holiday in is just minutes away from the action.
